Innes Dean Club Competition
Netball Manawatū has announced its 2025 Under 16 representative teams, highlighting a an increase in participation, fresh coaching talent, and new development pathways aimed at strengthening the region’s netball future.
The organisation has seen significant growth in its Under 16 age group this year, with an impressive turnout at trials and fierce competition for selection. According to Netball Manawatū General Manager Ashleigh-Kate Araroa-Waerea, the depth of talent made the selection process particularly challenging.
“We’ve seen more growth, more potential, and definitely more competitiveness,” said Araroa-Waerea. “The number of girls who came out and gave it their all made it incredibly tough for our selectors — and that’s an exciting problem to have.”
New Coaches Bring Experience and Mentorship
In a boost for the programme, three new coaches have joined the Under 16 space, including two who have progressed from the Under 14 level — a move aimed at strengthening coaching continuity and long-term development.
Leading the Manawatū Under 16 Green team is Terina Peina, who brings her experience from coaching the U14 Green team. Peina is excited about the campaign ahead and confident in the squad’s potential.
“We’ve got great height, speed, and raw talent in our top 12 selections,” she said. “This season I hope to grow my own coaching leadership while helping these young women perform at their best.”
Peina is joined by Kara Adrole, a current Central Manawa and Samoa U21 representative, and Renee Matoe, a previous Central Pulse player (#71) and actively involved in Netball across the Central Zone are both involved in coaching and mentoring roles.
Araroa-Waerea added that the trio of experienced players returning to coach and give back to the programme is a major boost:
“It’s exciting to see high-performance players investing their time and knowledge into grassroots netball.”
Teamwork and Values at the Forefront of U16 White
Coaching the Manawatū Under 16 White team is Miriam Eglinton, who brings a focus on building strong team culture and developing the strengths of each individual player.
“I’m really excited to be part of the Under 16 programme this year,” said Eglinton. “This team is full of hardworking, talented athletes. I’m looking forward to creating a united and competitive squad.”
Supporting her as a mentor is Mārie Toye, who brings additional experience to the coaching space and is committed to supporting rangatahi on and off the court.
“It’s a privilege to be a part of an organisation that strives to empower its community”, said Toye. “Supporting rangatahi who strive for learning on and off the court”.
An assistant coach is yet to be confirmed for the White team, with final discussions currently underway.
New Development Team Strengthens Depth
In response to the high level of interest and talent, Netball Manawatū has also established a Manawatu Development Team — a move designed to keep players engaged, ready, and growing throughout the season.
This initiative ensures athletes who narrowly missed selection for the Green or White squads remain in the fold, continuing to train and develop alongside their peers.
“The Development Team allows us to support more athletes in meaningful ways,” Araroa-Waerea explained. “It keeps our players ready in the event of injuries and builds depth for the future.”
Still on the horizon is our Betty Steffensen Programme, ensuring all players have an opportunity to experience Representative Netball.
